Introduction to Healthy Equity
As we all begin to implement the 50 Steps strategy, our Step teams are being supported to create action plans not only for their Steps but more specifically, for the equity objectives.
Equity is the golden thread that runs through the entire strategy because doing the work to deliver equity isfundamental to delivering better health outcomes for Newham residents.
The World Health Organisation defines equity as ‘the absence of unfair, avoidable or remediable differences among groups of people, whether those groups are defined socially, economically, demographically, or geographically or by other dimensions of inequality (e.g. sex, gender, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation)… Health equity is achieved when everyone can attain their full potential for health and wellbeing.’
In Newham, health outcomes are disproportionately poor for residents affected by deprivation and poverty, many of whom are from global majority populations; and there is further intersectionality based on other dimensions mentioned above.
The Newham Health Equity Programme will work with Step teams, Health and Care commissioners and anyone who is curious to identify, explore, and mitigate these inequities, to support services to be fair and effective, and deliver good outcomes for all our residents.
