Join Quit Well Newham this Stoptober
Newham Council is supporting residents to kick-starting the conversation to quit smoking this Stoptober which is taking place on Tuesday 1st October.
Smoking is the biggest cause of death and disease which can be prevented. The rate of smoking among adults in Newham (18+) is 10.7% with higher rates of smoking among people with long-term conditions around 14 per cent. Smoking can develop and worsen long-term conditions including dementia, respiratory heart disease, stroke and most cancers, particularly affecting older people.
Quitting smoking can be difficult, but Quit Well Newham are sharing their recipe for success helping residents to quit smoking this Stoptober. Advisors will be holding drop-in sessions and outreach events at high footfall locations including pubs and bars to raise awareness throughout October.
There is a particular focus on supporting older people, people with long-term conditions and those from ethnic minority communities. By joining Quit Well Newham, smokers are 4x more likely to quit smoking than if they were to try on their own.
The service offer 12 weeks of expert advice and support for smokers and smokeless tobacco users intending to quit with free vape starter kits and nicotine replacement therapy. Support is also available in Bengali, Urdu, Gujarati, Lithuanian and BSL. There has never been a better time to create your recipe to quitting.
A key ingredient for quitting smoking is to exercise away the urge. Betterpoints Newham are encouraging people to quit smoking and get fit to improve their health.
