50 Steps to a Healthier Newham 2024-2027: Building our Changemaker community

In April 2024 more than 100 of us came together to launch 50 Steps to a Healthier Newham 2024-2027. As we said then, this shared strategy can only be achieved through all of us working together. And it is shaped on what we have learned since the first strategy. One of the most important things is how much people across Newham already do for each other around health and wellbeing. We can see this in the more than 200 ideas put forward as part of the People Powered Places programme that focused explicitly on health and wellbeing (with many more having health as a secondary outcome from their work). We can see it in the more than 500 people who volunteer each year through Volunteer Newham to help each other out in so many ways. And there are so many more unsung heroes.

That is what our Changemakers programme is all about. It’s about celebrating and shining a light on people from all of Newham’s many communities. It’s about inspiring others by showing what their friends and neighbours are already doing. And it’s about building connections, links, relationships and collaborations. It’s also about influencing senior leaders in the council and having training and support if you would like. Over 50 people are already Changemakers – and you can see all their stories here.

Changemakers receive invitations to free training about a range of different health and wellbeing topics including cost of living, mental wellbeing, supporting people with housing and more. They also receive a Welcome Pack setting out the programme and invitations to events including our annual review of 50 Steps and dedicated events like our ‘In conversation with the Director of Adults, Health and Communities’, and more.

To recognise involvement in the programme, Changemakers also receive a certificate from the Mayor and Dr Jason Strelitz, Director of Adults, Health and Communities, as well as Changemakers pin. If you are a Changemaker, or know someone or a group of people who are, we would love to hear about it and make their work visible – to celebrate and to inspire.
