Newham Nursery achieves the Early Start Nutrition Award-Silver

A huge congratulations to Little Amber Nursery in Beckton, who have proudly achieved the Early Start Nutrition Silver Award!

Their application showcased the impressive steps they’ve taken to strengthen their nutrition provision for early years children. They continue to develop fantastic seasonal menus, which are healthy, balanced and nutritious.

In achieving the Silver Award they successfully met all their Bronze Award goals by:

  • Strengthening breastfeeding support so mothers feel welcomed and confident to breastfeed or provide expressed milk for their child.
  • Reviewing and reinforcing safe formula preparation procedures in-line with NHS Best Start In Life guidance, displaying clear step by step instructions in bottle preparation areas, and ensuring bottle feeding is always responsive and nurturing.
  • Creating calmer, more positive mealtimes where children explore food at their own pace. Staff now feel more confident supporting fussy eaters and communicating with families, helping ensure consistency at home.
  • Actively promoting the NHS Healthy Start scheme through enrolment conversations, displays, newsletters and parent communications, helping normalise discussions and reduce barriers to accessing support.
  • Developing a vegetable patch and regular cooking activities, increasing children’s interest in where food comes from and encouraging them to try new fruits and vegetables. Children have gained confidence, independence and practical cooking skills, and families report greater interest in healthy eating at home.
  • Strengthening food safety procedures so children eat safely in a calm, well supervised environment. Families feel reassured that children’s individual needs and special dietary requirements are understood and consistently followed, building trust in the nursery’s food provision.
