World Heart Day 2026

World Heart Day takes place every year on 29 September. Led by the World Heart Federation, it raises awareness of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the world’s leading cause of death. The 2026 theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat”, encourages people to recognise the signs of heart disease, take steps to protect their heart health, and support action to reduce the impact of cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease includes conditions such as coronary heart disease, stroke and heart failure. Globally, around one in three deaths is linked to cardiovascular disease. The good news is that many heart conditions can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including eating healthy food, being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, and managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Vaccination can also play an important role in protecting heart health. Flu infection can increase the risk of serious cardiovascular complications, including heart attacks and heart failure flare-ups. For those who are eligible, getting a flu vaccination is a simple and effective way to help protect both heart health and overall wellbeing.

Regular health checks and early action can help people understand their risk factors and make positive changes before problems develop. Through Well Newham, residents can access information, advice and support on healthy eating, physical activity, weight management, stop smoking services, vaccinations, NHS Health Checks and other services that can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In September, the Well Newham Sunday Funday event will also include talks on cardiovascular disease, heart health, healthy eating and vaccination, helping residents learn practical ways to improve their long-term health. The event will be taking place on Sunday 20 September 2026, from 11am to 4pm at Shipman Youth Zone.

You can play an important role by encouraging residents, friends and family to take positive steps towards better heart health, attend health checks when invited, and access local support and services available through Well Newham.

Please take a moment to talk about heart health with the residents you work with and support, share this message through your networks, and encourage people to access the hFelp and support available.
